Rep. Geran Tarr

Rep. Tarr Sponsors the University of Alaska Anchorage Undergraduate Research and Discovery Symposium Today at the Anchorage Legislative Information Office

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 5, 2016

Anchorage – Representative Geran Tarr (D-Anchorage) is highlighting some of the valuable research being undertaken by students and faculty at the University of Alaska by sponsoring the University of Alaska Anchorage Undergraduate Research and Discovery Symposium today in Anchorage.  This comes as the Alaska Legislature is deliberating over the proposed FY 2017 budget, which includes a $50 million cut in funding for the University of Alaska.  Such a cut will result in the loss of hundreds of jobs and diminish the ability of the University to conduct needed academic research.

“The value of the University of Alaska becomes readily apparent when you take a look at the amazing research being done by our graduate and undergraduate students,” said Rep. Geran Tarr.  “I don’t see any wisdom in lawmakers trying to fill our $4 billion budget gap by shortchanging the future educational opportunities of thousands of Alaska’s students.”

The University of Alaska Anchorage Undergraduate Research and Discovery Symposium will be held today from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Anchorage Legislative Information Office in downtown Anchorage.  The symposium will feature the results of academic research conducted by undergraduate students at the University of Alaska Anchorage.

“One of the missions of the University of Alaska is to train the next generation of professionals that will help manage our fish and game, teach our children, develop new technologies, and understand the natural environment,” said Christopher Jung with the UAA Department of Biological Sciences.  “The knowledge that comes from academic research is difficult to quantify but is invaluable in broadening our understanding of how things work.”

As part of today’s University of Alaska Anchorage Undergraduate Research and Discovery Symposium, students and faculty will be available from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. to answer questions of the media and the public regarding their research projects.
